Swedish Massage
In Sweden, "Swedish massage" is simply known as "classic massage". And that is exactly what it is - a classic treatment which represents the western standard for massage.
The five main techniques used in Swedish massage - stroking and gliding; kneading; rubbing; tapping or "pounding"; vibration - are probably what spring to mind when you think about a "typical" massage. They're designed to improve your circulation, soothe your muscles and make you more relaxed.
Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This sensitivity to pressure makes it ideal for relaxation.
Besides the calming benefits, Swedish massage is good for:
* easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins
* improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood
* helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple
* stimulating the nervous system
* reducing emotional and physical stress.
Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy is the systematic use of volatile plant oils known as essential oils for the treatment or prevention of disease. It is a form of complementary therapy designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom or disease by assisting the body's natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself. Essential oils consist of tiny aromatic molecules that are readily absorbed via the skin, and whilst breathing they enter the lungs. These therapeutic constituents next enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body where they can deliver their beneficial healing powers. The soothing combination of beautiful aromas whilst massaging, works to regulate, balance, heal and maintain your entire being by working with nature, and not against it.
Aromatherapy is one of the most popular of all complementary therapies, offering a wide range of highly effective treatments to both the acute and chronic stages of illness and disease. At the same time, regular use of aromatherapy treatments and home-use products can help to strengthen the immune system, thereby establishing a preventative approach to overall health.
One of the reasons that aromatherapy has been so hugely successful is because it uses a holistic approach, whereby I take into account my clients medical history, emotional condition, general health and lifestyle before planning a course of treatment. The whole person is treated - not just the symptoms of an illness - and this is in direct opposition to the modern trend of just treating the presented condition.
Backache, irritable bowel syndrome or headaches, for example, are often the result of stress and not actually a physical problem. Therefore no amount of pill-popping is really going to provide a long term solution since it only masks the symptoms without addressing the problems. By looking at the causes of the stress and providing treatments to ease and manage it, aromatherapy will alleviate the condition in a much more efficient manner.
It has long been known that stress accounts for a staggering amount of illness in modern society, and aromatherapy offers one of the finest ways of combating the ravages of stress without having to resort to drugs which can be habit forming and damaging to your health.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a type of therapy that involves the massaging of the feet to treat and heal an individual's entire body. It is said to be a gentle type of therapy, used to restore the body's natural balance as well as to help maintain its equilibrium..
Historically, the use of reflexology dates back to ancient China, Egypt, and Greece. Today, reflexology is used as a therapeutic treatment for a full range of conditions, including back pain, sports injuries, migraines, and arthritis. This type of therapy is even said to be effective in treating infertility, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and sleep disorders. Furthermore, many believe it to be particularly helpful in the treatment of a full range of stress-related conditions.
Perhaps one of the most important uses of reflexology is for stress relief. In today's world, individuals are faced with ever-increasing levels of physical, mental, and emotional stress. Reflexology therapy can act as an effective tool in relaxing the body and the mind, relieving stress, and helping to restore a general feeling of well-being.
People of all ages may benefit from reflexology treatment. While some individuals may choose to enjoy the therapy on an occasional basis, many choose to receive such treatments regularly. Many individuals who seek regular treatments believe doing so helps them to maintain their health and well-being.
Reflexology is not just recognized by those interested in alternative treatments and therapies. Many medical doctors and other health care professionals also recognize it as an effective therapeutic treatment. Some recommend it to their patients as a supplement to medical care.
A reflexology treatment typically lasts for about an hour. During this time, I uses my hands, especially the thumbs, to apply pressure to the feet. The amount and location of the pressure, as well as the effect of the treatment, is dependant on the needs of each individual.
Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage is thought to have been in existence for over five thousand years. It is part of the system of medicine known as Ayurveda. Techniques are applied to the upper back, shoulders, arms and hands and then working up through the neck, scalp and face.
Ideal for any neck or shoulder tension, the massage starts on the back and neck working deeply over the muscles and pressure points that help the muscles to relax.
Moving on to the scalp, massage techniques are used which relax, stimulate and revive this area. The whole scalp is covered to encourage circulation, oxygen and nutrients to the area. The effect of this is to help stimulate hair growth and revitalize the brain.
Finally, the treatment finishes with a wonderful soothing face massage, which includes pressure points and draining techniques that may help headaches and sinus problems.
Audio Sonic
An audio sonic machine creates sound waves of 100-10,000 Hertz (in the range of human hearing) which causes tissues under treatment to vibrate simultaneously, resulting in nerve stimulation. Working like a tuning fork, the sound waves are transferred into the tissues up to around 6cm deep. When applied to painful areas, for example tension in the shoulders, audio sonic treatment speeds up the healing process through increased blood supply. Ideal for difficult knots in the shoulder and neck area.
